One of the concerns that I hear from parents all the time is, “What if my kids won’t behave?” As a photographer working with kids, I know that it can be sometimes feel like a challenge to keep them engaged and excited. But honestly, I don’t want your kids to “behave”; I want them to be themselves. I want them to have fun and be silly. I want the images that we create to reflect your child’s unique personality. There are some things that you can do to encourage cooperation though, and in this post I’ll share some of my top tips for a fun and engaging sessions with kids! I promise that a session with your little loves can be fun and stress-free.
1. Bring treats for you littles
A little treat can help to get your kids on board during the session, so consider bringing some non-messy bite sized snacks!
2. Let them bring their favourite toy
If your child has a favourite toy or stuffie, let them bring it along – bonus points if it’s on brand like this little guy’s bunny!
3. Let them lead the way
Allow your kids to lead the way and go with the flow. Relax and have fun. Sit if your kids want to sit, chase them if they want to run!
4. Love on them
Don’t be afraid to love on your kids (and your partner!) during the session! I want your images to reflect the genuine connection that you share. Those sweet, candid moments full of love tell the story of your family.
5. Let your kids be kids
Your kids are most happy when you allow them to be themselves. So let them play, laugh, and hug you. They don’t have to look at the camera and smile for me to create images that showcase their carefree and happy personality.
6. Relax and trust me
This is the best way to achieve those intimate, connected images. Please do not tell your children to smile at the camera, and don’t become frustrated if you feel that things aren’t going the way that you planned. Interact with your children as you normally would. Whisper secrets in their ear while you cuddle them close. Be affectionate with your partner. Let your kids be themselves.
