edmonton portrait photographer | what’s in my bag?

This is a question that I get asked occasionally by my clients, but mostly by other photographers.  So here are the deets… and before you ask it’s a fabulous Kelly Moore 2 Sues bag  …. and a rolling Lowepro bag if I need to bring ALL my stuff  😉

My main body is a Nikon D810 full frame DSLR.  I love it.  Like, a lot.

I have a back-up full frame Nikon D800, ’cause you gotta have a plan if things go south.

My lens arsenal consists of some really fabulously fast, super sharp, extremely heavy glass.  I use my 24-70 f2.8 occasionally. My 70-200 f2.8 is my new favourite lens to shoot anything I can with!  I’ve had in my bag for years, but rarely pulled it out.  In the last year, I have used it a tonne and I love the separation and the compression that it allows.

I LOVE my 85 f1.8. It’s ridiculously sharp and my go-to portrait lens.

I will pull out my 105 Macro for detail shots: delicious baby toes and sweet baby fingers, noses, belly buttons and flaky skin. All of these shots are made possible with this lens. So, I don’t use it a lot, but it is an essential part of my kit!

I have a couple of SB-800 flashes and some pocket wizards that I use for events, like wedding receptions. But that is the extent of my artificial light sources. I love the feel that natural light can give to my images and it is what I have decided to specialize in.

I also have an assortment of San Disk Extreme Pro Memory Cards, my Light Meter (which I could not live without!) and my Expodisc which is super awesome to help out with white balance.

So those are the tools… the rest is your willingness to open up with those you love: to cuddle, to play, to laugh. And then trust me to capture these moments, to allow you to keep them forever.

“Photographers deal in things which are constantly vanishing, & when they have vanished, there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again. We cannot develop & print a memory.”
