3 tips for a perfect maternity session | edmonton maternity photographer

Your motherhood journey begins while you’re pregnant, before you give birth. You’re beautiful and glowy (even if you don’t 100% feel it!) and already forming the bond that will last for the rest of your life. This is the beginning of the woman becoming the mother, and it’s life changing. It doesn’t matter if this is your first baby or your fifth… this moment,  your body as one with your unborn child needs to be celebrated.

If you don’t know where to begin planning a session that will result in images that you love, check these out:

3 Tips for a Perfect Maternity Session

1. Find a Photographer Whose Work You Love

A professional photographer will know how to style, pose, and use light to make you look your absolute best.

Make sure that you love their style: there are so many options out there! Do you love studio maternity or would you prefer something outside? Or is an in-home lifestyle session for you?

Light and airy with a neutral palette? Boho chic? Vibrant colours? Belly boudoir? Make sure that you love your photographer’s style to ensure you get images you love.

2. Timing

Plan to have your session between 28-34 weeks.

It’s important to schedule while your tummy is nice and round, but before you feel too uncomfortable. This timeline will vary for every mama depending on how you’re carrying; if you’re having multiples or if you’ve grown a bit more rapidly schedule your session earlier.

3. Get Pampered

If possible, plan to have a mani and pedi (your hands on your belly will definitely be a focus in your images).

I also highly recommend getting your hair and make-up professionally done for your session: it makes such a huge difference in the final images and helps you feel confident and gorgeous.

Choose Classic Over Trendy – Weekly Wardrobe | Edmonton Photographer

This week’s Weekly Wardrobe tip: choose classic over trendy. Think about choosing neutral or pastel colours & avoid trends. Go for classic looks that will stand the test of time. You don’t want to look at your portraits in 10 years & question your fashion choices! Avoid items of clothing with writing or logos or characters of any kind – as well as being super distracting, it can really date your images. You want to be able look back at your portraits and see the love and connection in your family and how much your kids have grown, not fashion faux pas!

If you choose classic over trendy your pictures will stand the test of time!

What to Wear for Winter Portraits – Weekly Wardrobe | Edmonton Family photographer

It’s a little bit cold and snowy and blustery out today – a very wintry day – so it seemed like the perfect day to talk about what to wear for winter portraits!

Since it’s going to ideally anywhere from -5 degrees or warmer (especially if you have small children) you don’t necessarily have to plan to wear bulky jackets and toques. Warm, comfy sweaters in neutral tones, paired with leggings or a cute skirt & a pair of great boots always look amazing in photographs. Really the rules don’t change all that much: keep your clothing in the same tonal range, add some texture and layers, like a fun scarf, or a blanket to wrap everybody up in for a cute, cuddly touch.

Dress in layers & even if the day is mild, make sure that you also have mitts and warm jackets to slip on in between photographs.

What to Wear for Winter PortraitsWinter sessions offer the advantage of a neutral background and often spectacular light!

Happy New Year! | Edmonton Photographer

I know this is a bit late, but I have a incredibly hard time getting back into the swing of things after the holiday this year. I don’t know if it’s just me, or if you’re feeling it too… but it seems even harder than normal to get back to it this year. So Happy New Year! I also really want to say thank you. When I look back at my journey over 2020, it was tough and I’m so incredibly grateful to have had you along for the ride. You’ve encouraged me, inspired me, cheered me on and lifted me up when I was down. You’ve offered your support in the most unlikely of times and given me a safe place to share my art, my thoughts and my ideas.

I hear you. I see you. I am so incredibly grateful for you.

So thank you from whole heart; I so appreciate you. ❤

I have exciting things coming in the weeks and months and I can’t wait to share… so stay tuned! 2021 is going to be amazing!
