Pick the Colours First – Weekly Wardrobe | Edmonton Photographer

When you’re planning the wardrobe for your portrait session, I recommend that you start by selecting a base of 2-3 colours for your main palette. We’re then going to carry those through the outfits so that everything “goes” together but doesn’t match exactly. We’re also going to add pops of 2-3 accent colours. Keep in mind that the colours you choose for each family member do not have to be exactly the same, but they should look nice together. To create a timeless & elegant style, mix neutrals with some soft accent colors. Neutral colors will result in organic images that focus on you & your loves.

Pick the Colours First - Weekly Wardrobe

I’ve pulled this example together using pieces from the studio wardrobe. We’ve talked in the past about dressing mama first, so that she’s wearing something that she loves and feels awesome in and if we do that, we have a really good starting point. I’m going to start with this BHLDN dress from the studio wardrobe that was featured last week as the starting point for what mama is going to wear. It’s gorgeous and a lovely light blue-y gray colour.

To add an outfit for a second family member, I would look at something like this for a little boy: the light blue shirt echoes the colour and tone in mom’s dress and we add a main neutral colour with the gray sweater. I’d add a pair of light khaki pants to go with this for him.

For a little girl, I’d look at another main neutral with the white top and sweater and then adding in a pop of colour and texture with the pink skirt.

For dad with this combination, I’d look at a light gray sweater or shirt and a pair of lighter neutral pants similar in tone to what we put on the little boy.Pick the Colours First - Weekly Wardrobe

So really, if you just pick a starting palette, and a couple of soft accent colours you’re set. This isn’t an exact science, and it’s fun to mix and match pieces to see what looks best!

Feel like this still seems super overwhelming? Let me help – my clients often text me while they’re out shopping or going through their closets. I am so happy to offer advice to help you come to a cohesive look.

Edmonton Photographer studio space | Family and Newborn Photography

Hi there! My name is Jamie.  I am an Edmonton Photographer and this is my BRAND NEW studio space!

As you may know, I have been working like mad since March on renovating my new space. It’s been *mostly* finished since August. We’re moved in, & I have been photographing sessions & meeting with clients but there have been a few last finishing things that Husband refuses to complete.

*sigh*

I mean, I love him & stuff, & he did put an extraordinary amount of time & effort into bringing my vision to life. (And to be fair, he has been really busy – he started his own plumbing & electrical company last fall) But really, I JUST WANT TO BE FINISHED!!!!

Honestly though, it’s so close & I am excited to share some images of the new space with you!

Welcome!

Classic Neutral Palette – Weekly Wardrobe | Edmonton Photographer

This week I want to chat about Zara. I was on Zara’s website over the weekend while I was working on my Simply Holiday Client Prep Guide. I was going through some websites and tagging some outfits to help mama’s out while they’re planning wardrobes for their Simply Holiday Sessions which are coming up on November 14! I literally could have dropped $500, no word of a lie, without even blinking from Zara. I could have bought ALL THE THINGS for the studio wardrobe.

Like seriously… how amazing is that collection of stuff?!  I love it all! Check out the full Pinterest board!

In case you didn’t get this from that little video… neutrals! Neutrals are always going to be an amazing addition to your wardrobe for your portrait session. Doesn’t matter whether it’s a Simply Holiday Session with a festive theme, or a regular session in the studio or outside at the field,  you can’t go wrong if you stick to a classic neutral palette. You can add a little bit of pattern for interest, but you really can’t go wrong with neutrals. It allows us to focus on your beautiful expressions and your kid’s adorable faces without being distracted by the clothing that you’re wearing.

By choosing a neutral palette, you choose to allow your faces to be the focus of your images without distractions from bright colours.

Done correctly, it is a clean & classic look that stands the test of time.
